THE DETECTIVE
Planning Officer Arnold Landon is inhibited and painfully aware of his lack of academic credentials. He lives in the North East of England and as self taught archaeologist he confounds academic experts with his detailed knowledge, which involves him in a local murder. His expertise brings him promotion to the Archaeology Department where he meets frustration, which he nevertheless overcomes by making important discoveries of ancient artefacts while playing a leading role in solving local crimes. A succession of opportunities for further promotion pass him by because of his desire to remain in touch with the detailed history of sites in Northumberland and this leads to conflict, first with his inadequate superior and then with the stunningly beautiful Karen Stannard and, later in his career, the Italian archaeologist Carmela Cacciatore.

Great read Another great mystery from this author MURDER IN THE CHURCH a completely addictive crime mystery full of twists (Arnold Landon Detective Mystery and Suspense Book 5) Well written, made me keep guessing too Somewhat different to what I usually read very knowledgeable about the subject and ancient architecture

A newly titled reissue ( The Devil is Dead..1989..a much better title) from this prolific author. Some good ,as ever, NE England scene setting and some nice touches here and there. However ,I have always found the series character of Arnold Landon to be both colourless and irritating even pointless at times.

The female characters are both few in number and not portrayed with any conviction. These new publishers go out of their way to tell readers that this doesn't have mobiles etc etc. But, in 1989 there were computers and there were strict drink drive laws and laws about firing shot guns in public meetings. Alas here, we have such details almost glossed over with a fairly inept investigation.

I would like to have been positive but am not sure that time has been kind to these reissues and I will probably move on. zombies It's the mystery that keeps you drawn. You can never guess the outcome. I look forward to read the next story. Kindle A good series and entertaining but this one is average as it gets away from the main business of stone and timber.

Underneath there is a good story but Roy goes for sensation and mysticism. Good for many but less interesting for me. There is a lot of mayhem and false trails for the reader but in the end Roy has to point us in the right direction. True to Roy Lewis’ talent, this is a weird but compelling read.

Arnold Landon’s exploits continue to puzzle yet fascinate me and I look forward to reading of his adventures. A book that was impossible to put down. I got immersed in the story and the mysterious happenings. I was surprised by how many times that I was certain had solved the murders, only to find another twist baffling me.
