A moving, well-written story in a contemporary setting featuring a variation of the Persephone myth by a thoughtful young author. Especially recommended for young readers seeking inspiration to get through challenging situations. Ellie Collins This one short read consists of many layers.
This story tells of overcoming fears and anxiety, remaining true to oneâs self, and the importance of ignoring assumptions. The unconditional love and understanding of a parent provides a solid base for his child to stand on.
As the new girl in town, D.J. would much rather climb back into bed than attend her first day of middle school. Making new friends is never easy. Asking those brand-new friends to try something completely different from the norm is frightening.
To the ancient Greeks, mythology was used to provide answers to unanswerable questions. Mythology was also used to explain social situations. After the loss of her mother, D.J. found Persephone to be the perfect Goddess to help guide her through her social fears. D.J. was able to use the trials experienced by Persephone to navigate through her own insecurities. As humans, we yearn to grow and expand our horizons. The difficult part, however, is accomplishing this without closing the door on an important part of your being. Through their talks, D.J. found the courage to power through her fears to remain true to herself.
Another pitfall of being the new kid is becoming the recipient of everyoneâs well-meaning but misguided opinions. You never know what youâll miss out on if you believe a teacher is unapproachable or a fellow student is singularly focused. View others with an open mind. Decide for yourself if you want to interact with them or not.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning the various lessons expressed through the imaginings of the author. I look forward to reading her future work.
Ellie Collins A fabulous middle grade read! Has a touch of fantasy, mixed with a helping of real life. I loved the Greek mythology references, and the modernization of them. Hardcover Obtained a free copy in exchange for an honest review by Booktasters on Twitter
Daisy, Bold & Beautiful is the story of D.J, A young girl who learns to overcome her fears and gain the confidence to stand up for herself.
D.J has recently transferred schools and is very nervous about her first day at the new school. She meets May, a bubbly girl in her bus, and instantly feels a sense of security with her. She then meets Payton and Lexi who will later become her friends for life!
As the story goes on, Persephone The Goddess of spring visits D.J and they both instantly bond as they share their common love for gardening. They talk about their life and how D.J picked up her love for gardening from her mom. D.J is sad to hear about the story of Persephone and how Hades tricked her into staying in the underworld where no plants grow.
Although D.J had made friends on her first day of school, she is nervous and feels like she doesn't belong with them. Mainly because of the video games that the girls love but D.J has no interest in. She is scared to express what she really feels and thus is made to play games with the girls.
So, one day Persephone and D.J make a promise that each one will stand up for themselves. And D.J overcomes her anxiety and fears and finally is able to communicate with her friends and also the cute guy Hudson she had a crush on! And Persephone on the other hand convinces Hades to let her plant the house plants that required less sunlight!
This is a pretty neat and straightforward story especially when it's from an eleven-year-old. The story was short as apparently, it is a part of the series. This was a good read and I liked it mainly because it had the greek mythology stuff which I love. English This is such a heartwarming story about a girl starting middle school in a new town, new school and without her mom. The book is well-written and to know it was written by a ten-year-old is mind-blowing. I loved every aspect of this book from the rendezvous in the garden with the mythical Goddess, Persephone to the challenges of trying to fit in at an awkward age in life. The messages are powerful in this book. 'Be yourself no matter what' is a strong message. And, if you stay true to yourself, everything will fall into place. The book also touches on how a child deals with her grief at the loss of a parent. I highly recommend this book for teens and tweens. I think everyone can learn something from Daisy Bold & Beautiful. My hat is off to the young author! Daisy, Bold Beautiful
It's a book written by a ten-year-old! It is far beyond my expectation; I have to admit.
The plot is well developed with a profound meaning. It recounts the story of a young girl's anxiety in her first week in a new town, attending a new school and trying to fit into a group of newly acquainted friends amidst her sorrow of losing her mother in recent months.
The author's mature writing is illustrated in the idyllic garden scenes, the depiction of the girl's emotional dread, and the resolve of overcoming self-doubt and being herself. It's ingenious to seamlessly incorporate the characters of Greek mythology into the narrative to convey the essence of the story.
This book is not only good for mid-school age but also suitable for older ones, even an adult. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a good read and find a dose of fantasy and inspiration.
Hardcover We are proud to announce that DAISY, BOLD & BEAUTIFUL by Ellie G. Collins is a B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree. This tells readers that this book is well worth their time and money! A BIG Thank You to NetGalley and Fresh Ink Group for providing me a copy of âDaisy, Bold & Beautifulâ by by Ellie Collins in exchange for my review. I really wasnât expecting to like this book as much as I did! âDaisyâ was a sweet and charming book to read!
Itâs always tough being the new kid in school, and the author has written DJâs story in a very positive manner. She shows DJâs vulnerable side by highlighting how she tries to adjust making friends than being socially awkward. I actually enjoyed the fantasy element where DJ meets Persephone for help. Iâm sure the pure history buffs of Greek mythology might roll their eyes on how Hades is mentioned, but it was hilarious thinking of the Greed Gods as teenagers. My favorite character in the story is May. This girl is so upbeat and positive in life that she would make anyone comfortable to be her friend. I also liked Lexiâs trivia knowledge randomly mentioned. I was expecting someone like Payton to be more negative and hostile towards DJ. It would have been interesting to see a negative character in the book and see how DJ deals with her.
Ellie Collins has wonderful job in writing this novel! Wait a minute, the author is just a teenager? Holy cow, that is amazing! When I was reading this book, I thought it was written by a 20 or 30 year old professional! I can definitely see Ellie Collins going a long way, and cannot wait to read her future releases! Her style of writing is so smooth and simple, and the plot is easy to understand and follow. I would love to see her try another genre such as a more mature young adult theme.
The primary reason I didnât give this a 5 star rating was because of the cover. Firstly, who is that supposed to be in the cover? I suspect it is Persephone as she looks mature based on her stature. Why didnât they just put an illustration of DJ with her friends, as she is the main protagonist? Secondly, if it is Persephoneâs garden, it is supposed to look lush and vibrant. Instead the cover looks dull, and so does the character. Itâs such a shame because the cover doesnât do justice to the lovely story. Had I not received this for a review, I donât think I would have picked it up based on the cover. It makes the book seem like this is a book for preschoolers.
Overall, this is a sweet and light-hearted middle grade book to read and I rate it 4/5 stars. A wonderful story written by an exceptional storyteller...
More often than not we relate ourselves with the characters of a good story. In such circumstances, reading fiction can help us to get inspiration from the characters. These novels often portray real life implications through anecdotes, and as such makes it easier for us to understand the complex aspects of life. Moreover, reading these novels at regular intervals can actually help the reader to develop a positive outlook towards life, which eventually proves beneficial for good character development.
Daisy, Bold & Beautiful by Ellie Collins is a well-crafted contemporary coming of age novel. The story had every element a good story should have. A solid and captivating plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. Thereâs plenty of imagery in the writing style that makes you feel like you are right there in the story, and thatâs something I really look for in a good book.
The book description itself gives a sneak preview: âD.J. and her dad moved far from the small town and only home she ever knew. Now sheâs starting middle school in the city with kids sheâs never met. She tries to make friends, but they all appear to be slaves to screen time. D.J. just likes to garden, nurturing plants, watching them grow and thrive. It seems sheâll never find a way to fit in, but then she awakens in a gorgeous garden where she meets Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She must be dreaming; her new friend canât possibly be realâ"and what could she know about getting along with gamers? D.J. really needs some ideas, or she might never find her own place in a complicated world.â
Now, if thatâs not enough to get your curiosity juices flowing, I donât know what will. But if you want to find out what happens, youâll just have to turn the pages for yourself! However, I will say it was well worth the read. Itâs always a pleasure reading a debut novelist. But what makes this even more exceptional, is that it was written by a young author who was turning eleven and just beginning sixth grade!
Captivating and commendable, this work had me immersed from the beginning. Itâs a unique and whimsical fiction interwoven with true-life teenage drama. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of witty and fanciful moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly enchanting and fascinating journey!
Itâs one of those books that come along occasionally that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. Iâm giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader.
If this book is anything to go by, Iâll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Ellie Collins in the future. Not because itâs my particular type of genre, but because young talent should always be encouraged. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book. It also has a distinctly cinematic feel to it and I could easily see it being adapted to the Silver Screen. Perhaps food for thought for Miss Collins? A well-deserved five stars from me.
